How can I use some of the extra files, like PDF and DOC files?
Many files on our website should work automatically on newer computers. Only occasionally, you may need extra, free software to make them work.
Some files use the popular PDF format. To open a PDF file you need the free Adobe Reader software, which you may already have on your computer. If you do not have it, you can downloaded it free from the Adobe web site here...
Any files on this website needing the Adobe Reader software will have a little PDF icon next to the download link. The little icon looks like this:
Very rarely, some files might be in Microsoft Word (DOC) or Microsoft Powerpoint (PPT) format, although we try to avoid this if possible. If we do provide files in this format and you don’t have those programs on your computer to open them, you can download free reader programs to open them. Get the free Word (DOC) viewer here and the free Powerpoint (PPT) viewer here.
Any files on this website needing the Word Viewer will have a little Word icon next to the download link. The icon looks like this:
Any files on this website needing the Powerpoint Viewer will have a little Powerpoint icon next to the download link. The icon looks like this:
Unfortunately, these programs only let you open and read the files, not change them and Microsoft Office can be expensive to buy.
Fortunately, there is a free alternative called OpenOffice, that works just like the Microsoft Office programs. OpenOffice contains a word processor, called "Writer" that works just like "Word", a presentation maker called "Impress" that works like "PowerPoint" and a spreadsheet program called "Calc" that works like "Excel". There are extra programs for you to explore too!
OpenOffice is free to download, but quite large in size - even with a fast broadband internet connection, it will take a couple of hours!
